IRB deployment an embarrassment – Naga civil society

Dimapur, June 30 (MExN): Naga civil society has expressed strong resentment at what it said is the nature of ‘irresponsible handling by the administration using central and state police forces and creating an environment.’ The state government is asked to apologize unconditionally.

“The event (deployment of the 9th IRB in Chhattisgarh and the consequent toll) has caused unnecessary embarrassment and displayed the level of democratic space enjoyed by the Naga citizens” a joint statement appended by the NSF, NPMHR and NMA chiefs pointed out in distaste. The Naga civil society shares its strong opposition to the deployment of Naga personnel in any form into conflict situations by using them as fodder for Indian cannons, Naga civil society stated. This is only creating unending hatred amongst various and different communities in the region, the joint statement pointed out.

The three Naga frontals also held strong view that this ‘encroachment’ of civil space as an affront to Naga sensibilities; it is a stark violation of universally recognized democratic values, it stated. “Can the government of Nagaland spell out what kind of peace they aspire to build in Nagaland? Can there be any sustainable peace without the people? This double standard of talking peace should be questioned by all peace-loving citizens. The dastardly intrusion of (so-called) security forces into peaceful peoples’ to peoples’ dialogue poses grave danger to the democratic spirit for the nation which threaten Justpeace and therefore (civil society) demands an unqualified apology from the state government of Nagaland” it stated.
