The Nagaland State Irrigation & Flood Control Department has set a target to complete 270 minor irrigation projects during 2016-17 under the flagship programme ‘Pradan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY) Hat Ket Ko Pani.’
“It is expected to create irrigation potential of 10, 508 hectares during 2017-18 at an estimated cost of Rs. 206.85 crore with 90:10 centre state funding pattern,” informed the recently released Nagaland Economic Survey 2016-17.
Realizing that irrigation facilities to farmland is one of the necessary inputs to facilitate transition from subsistence farming to surplus farming, provision of adequate water infrastructure to farmers is a target of the department of Irrigation & Flood Control.
As per the report 2014-15, 5689 hectares have been brought under Gross Irrigation, which includes irrigation sources such as canals, tanks and tube wells. Although the state has not undertaken any major or medium irrigation project till date, it has taken on many minor irrigation projects.
The National Hydrology Programme at an estimated cost of Rs. 28.00 crore, which is 100 per cent centrally sponsored scheme funded by World Bank, was commissioned during 2016-17 and will be implemented over a period of eight years till 2023-24.
The programme envisages improving Water Resources Monitoring System (WRSM), Water Resources Information System (WRIS), Water Resources Management Application (WRMA) and strengthening institutions and capacity building.
