Morung Express Feature The banner of a small shop tucked away in the dusty Nagarjan Road calls out “Gelato Per Tutti” in Italian. Translated in English it means “Ice-Cream for everybody”. The Italian version of ice-cream is called Gelato and if you can believe it, we have an Italian making delicious Gelato for us in Dimapur! The ice-cream maker is Mikael, an Italian married to a Naga lady Naomi with whom he has a young son. The business is jointly owned by both of them along with in-laws Hriidzia and Shuzio. Italians have a rich history of making ice-cream at home, a practice which is still followed today. And even at the store, the ice-cream is prepared fresh every day and right in front of you! Of all the flavours, Butterscotch is the most popular at Gelato Per Tutti. They also offer Yoghurt, Cashewnut, Almonds, Coffee, Chocolate, Butterscotch, Pineapple, Banana & Papaya. For the more adventurous, try the Rice and Raisin or the Purple Yam & Beet Root. Anything can be made into ice-cream Mikael said showing how he has been experimenting with local seasonal fruits and flavours. For diabetic and health conscious people, he is also planning on making sugar free ice-cream. He is also more than happy to share ideas with customers and welcome all suggestions for ice-cream flavours. The store which was started in January 15 has a super friendly atmosphere with Mikael and his partners welcoming everybody who walks in. Sharing a story about how one customer walked in wanting coffee, and since they had everything at the shop, they happily made him a cup although they ended up having to serve it in their son’s Mickey Mouse mug. It is a very fun experience to watch the whole process of the ice-cream being made! And even if he is not at the ice-cream station, Naomi, Hriidzia, and Shuzio are very friendly and always there to serve customers with a cheerful smile. “We keep the price a bare minimum at 60 rupees per scoop for all flavours because we want people to eat what they want and not what they can afford. At the end we want our customers to be happy,” they shared. The satisfaction of having your choice of ice-cream made right in front of your eyes is definitely more satisfying than pre-manufactured ones!
