Itimi Leku (Children Hymnal) by the Western Sümi Baptist Akukuhou Kuqhakulu (WSBAK) was released this evening in a small ceremony, held at WSBAK Mission Centre, Aküvüto, Thahekhü.

The hymnal was dedicated and released by Rev Dr Khehovi Shohe, Director, Sumi Baptist Convention. Releasing the book, he elucidated that the Sümi Bible and hymnals are released through Sumi Baptist Convention (SBC), so that there would be no division in the context of languages and for the greater good of the community co-existing under different churches. Through this release, Rev Shohe prayed that many children will be blessed for generations to come, and that Sümis across the State can use the book in their own churches and Sunday schools.

Conveying the message of the power of songs, quoting scripture from the Bible, he said that songs can “drive out demons and dark forces through Jesus.” Whenever each person sings from this book, “I pray that God’s power would move through you, and that children and everyone using the hymnal will be immensely blessed,” he added.

Niholu Aye and family who sponsored the book, acknowledged the church for the hard work and being visionaries for the people, the book which took seven years to complete.

He thanked God for bringing him this far, and for the blessing bestowed upon his family to be able to do a bit for the community.
Giving a brief report in the making of the hymnal, Rev Hojevi Kappo, Secretary DoCMM acknowledged the church and all the stakeholders involved in the success of its release.

He said the task began in 2016 and the team faced hardships along the way. However, financial problem was not one of them, he said, as he expressed gratitude to the sponsorship family. The book was completed in September 2023 and found this the opportune time for the release.

WSBAK’s objective in producing the hymnal was to let children learn to praise God early on. Bible verses are highlighted on each song, as the source of the song inspiration.

The hymnal has 117 songs, which includes translated songs from various language and many of own compositions from the community.

The content includes songs of praise and worship, songs for birthdays, revival programmes, family prayer, social gathering and for Sunday schools. Responsive reading and lullabies for the children are also included, informed Rev Kappo. Though small in size, it will be an immense blessing for all, he conveyed, while adding that digital pictures are also included in the hymnal.

He maintained that WSBAK came up with the initiative noting the importance of producing hard copy and the need for children to have their own hymnal, while also underscoring the need for children to learn the staff notation from a young age. To be able to sing praises to God from one’s own language in the church, and also for the teachers to have a manual drove us to accomplish it, he added.

Rev Kappo also said the Sümi Bible and hymnals have become literature for the community.

Stating that the book was made during the constant revision of language, some errors may be visible, to which he hoped to come up with new editions in the future.

In his brief word of acknowledgment, Rev Dr Phughoto Sema, Executive Secretary, WSBAK said the release of the children hymnal has become “history” for the Sümis. He prayed that God will continue to bless the church. The book priced at Rs 300, will be available at WSBAK Mission Centre.
