Janata Dal (United), Manipur unit, on Saturday said that the party will boycott the Central government’s plan to carry out delimitation exercise in Manipur based on the 2001 Census report.

Addressing a press conference, JDU, Manipur unit president Hangkhanpao Taithul said that the delimitation exercise which was done across the country as per Delimitation Act 2002 was completed in 2008.

The exercise had left out Manipur, Assam, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh considering the problems to be created in these States, he also said.

For the state of Manipur, carrying out the delimitation based on the 2001 Census report will not bring any good result, he said and added that JDU will boycott it.

He then asked as to why the Centre had not decided to carry out the delimitation based on the 2011 census report. "If it is to be based on the 2011 census report, JDU will support it," he added.

JDU will also lobby the Central leaders of the party not to carry out the exercise, Hangkhanpao also said.

Manipur has 60 assembly constituencies, of which 19 are reserved for the ST category and one for Scheduled Castes.
