DIMAPUR, JULY 31 (MExN): The Japanese Encephalitis virus has till date claimed the lives of two people from Dimapur.

This information was given by State programme officer of the National Vector Borne Disease Control Programme and Deputy Director, Health and Family Welfare department Dr. I Talitemsula Jamir during an interview with AIR Kohima. She said, till date out of 40 suspected cases in Dimapur, 11 were detected positive while two succumbed to the fatal disease.

Dr. Jamir said JE can occur to any age groups and there is no cure for the virus, however preventive measures remain the only option. Stating the department alone cannot prevent this viral disease, she therefore urged the public to cooperate and support the department in preventing the disease. She further requested the public to get tested to the nearest health units without delay in any case of suspected JE.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Health and Family Welfare department, Dr. Neisakho Kere said JE can be prevented among the children with timely vaccination. He said children in the age group of below 15 years can avail the vaccines. Dr. Kere informed that vaccines are available in the seven districts except in Phek, Kiphire, Mon and Peren.
