John Yesong Memorial School celebrates Silver Jubilee

PHELUNGRE, October 19 (MExN): The John Yesong Memorial School (JYMS), Phelungre, celebrated its Silver Jubilee on October 17 with a thanksgiving mass and a series of events marking 25 years of the institution’s journey in education and community service.

John Tsulise Sangtam, Secretary, Work & Housing, Government of Nagaland, attended the celebration as the Special Guest, while Most Rev. Dr James Thoppil, Bishop of Kohima, was the Guest of Honour.

Speaking on the occasion, Tsulise said, “Learning is a lifelong process and the willingness to learn is a choice.” Drawing from his own life experiences, he shared how perseverance and diligence helped him achieve success in the state bureaucracy. He paid tribute to the late John Yesong, the first catechist of Tsueng district, who along with his late father initiated schooling at Loyola Higher Secondary School, Kiphire.

He stated that while hard work lays the foundation for success, “blessings can provide opportunities, guidance, and support that help navigate challenges.” He urged the students to respect their teachers and to strive for academic excellence.

Delivering his message during the thanksgiving mass, Bishop Thoppil expressed appreciation to those who have contributed to the school’s growth over the years. “Silver Jubilee celebration is a moment to reflect on achievements, express gratitude, and look forward with hope and optimism,” he said.

He described the Silver Jubilee as a milestone representing 25 years of “unwavering commitment, perseverance, and growth.” Emphasising the theme of renewal, he said, “Renewal is at the heart of this occasion, symbolising a fresh start, revitalised purpose, and renewed commitment.” He expressed hope that the celebration would “bring abundant blessings, joy, and prosperity,” and wished everyone continued growth, love, and harmony.

Rev. Fr Philip Magh, Parish Priest, welcomed the gathering. The jubilee monolith was blessed and unfurled by Bishop Thoppil and John Tsulise Sangtam, followed by the planting of the Jubilee Memorial Tree by the Special Guest, Guest of Honour, and Jefin Sam, OC, ‘D’ Coy. The Jubilee Flag was also unfurled by Chumliba, NCS, and Sr Lucy Jinger SABS, an alumna of the school.
