Dimapur, October 6 (MExN): A four-day intensive journalism for social action workshop was held at Salesian College of Higher Education, Dimapur, from 3 – 6 October for the thirty outgoing students of the college, animated by Fr. Tarcisisus Toppo, Director of Don Bosco Communications, Dimapur, with an aim at giving an in-depth knowledge of the working of the print media as well as equip them with skills in writing news stories.
Inaugurating the workshop Fr. Nicholas Guangdiat, Principal, urged the participants to equip themselves for their future life and work. “Writing skills are important in every field of study and work, and the print media can be a powerful weapon that can be utilized to raise issues of the poor and the underprivileged at a very low cost,” he said.
During the four days the participants were given a thorough theoretical input on how a newspaper works, the arrangements and layout of the news stories, on how to identify different types of stories contained in a paper, as well as hands on experiences on how to write the lead, the headlines, news stories, feature stories, letter to the editor etc.
It is to be noted that the workshop is an annual event organized by the college for the outgoing students, as a means of creating awareness in the students of the impact of the media, especially the print media and how this instrument can be used to bring about reform and development in the society. This is the third consecutive year that the workshop is being held in the premises.
