‘Journalism without Fear and Favour’

Patkai's MMC organises webinar on National Press Day

DIMAPUR, NOVEMBER 16 (MExN): To commemorate the National Press Day, the Department of Multimedia and Mass Communication (MMC), Patkai Christian College in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) organised a webinar titled ‘Journalism without Fear and Favour’ on November 16.

Imkong Walling, Principal Correspondent of The Morung Express was the resource person at the event and shared some insights on the theme, drawing from his more than a decade long experience of being a journalist.

Walling, apart from highlighting his journey so far, shared some pertinent challenges a journalist has to maneuver in a layered Naga society. In doing so, he underscored the dicey balancing act –the profession, security as well as family, as one goes about the work.

While being candid about the several challenges confronted daily and resolving it, he said that ‘fear’ acts as an impetus for journalists to do their jobs professionally and in a responsible manner.

The attendees comprised of students of the department, faculty members, other media practitioners etc. An interaction followed where issues of fake news, truth and reporting in a difficult state like Nagaland was discussed.

Earlier, the head of the Department, MMC, PCC, Dr Dakter Esse in her welcome address shared the significance of the National Press Day  by stating that the day symbolises the existence of a free and responsible press in India. On November 16, 1966 the Press Council of India (PCI) started functioning as a moral watchdog to ensure that the press not only maintains the expected high standards of the powerful medium but also is not fettered by the influence or threats of any extraneous factors.

Principal Patkai Christian College and IQAC Chairman, Dr Thepfüvilie Peirü in the opening remarks also highlighted the crucial role of a press in the society.

It concluded with a vote of thanks by Wahengbam Rojenn, Assistant Professor, MMC.
