Journalists in Manipur joined the country-wide protests today against killing, harassment, intimidation, threats and violence "directed at the press". While the rest of the State was observing Gandhi Jayanti, journalists in Manipur staged a sit-in protest at Keishampat in Imphal organised by All Manipur Working Journalists Union (AMWJU).
The members of AMWJU held many placards inscribed with slogans such as "Killing journalists is not the solution", "Change your attitude", "We strongly condemn the killing of Shantanu Bhowmik", "We journalists don't work to be killed," "Stop killing journalists" etc.
At least six journalists have been killed in Manipur alone. There have also been numerous cases of threats and intimidation meted out to the journalists in Manipur. Very often journalists in Manipur carry out protests against such unwanted activities but to no avail.
