July 26 NH accident: CYO, VYO condemn lack of safety guidelines

DIMAPUR, JULY 29 (MExN): Following the July 26 accident where two persons were killed due to a tree falling on a taxi in the National Highway (NH) at Chumoukedima, the Chakhroma Youth Organisation (CYO) and the Virazouma Youth Organisation (VYO) today cautioned against unsafe and hazardous working systems in the ongoing road works.

A press release from the CYO, while expressing condolences to the bereaved families, said it was “exasperated at the negligence of the highway construction company/firm in failing to take precautionary measure for the safety and security of the public.”

The CYO claimed that the firm had “failed to procure approval or inform the traffic police nor the administration and the local bodies for the ongoing road development works.” It urged the firm to give prior information to the traffic personnel and administration for public safety and smooth work progress.

The CYO further said that public safety should not be compromise in the course of road development works and that safety guidelines should be adhered to strictly. It meanwhile asked law enforcing agencies to book those responsible for the accident and and compensate the victims. Failure to do so, the CYO cautioned, would compel the organization to take its own course of action.

While lauding the government for taking up road development works and extending support to ongoing works in the Purana Bazaar to Chathe River Bridge Chumoukedima`stretch, the CYO reminded contractors to maintain timely watering of the roads.

Meanwhile, the VYO condemned that “negligence” which caused the July 26 accident, and questioned the “working system which was very unsafe for all commuters and passerby.” Urging the concerned authority to take action in this regard, the VYO said it would “not remain a mute spectator and leave no stone unturned until justice us delivered.”
