Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Supongmeren Jamir today called on aspiring legal professionals to uphold justice not just as a profession, but as a way of life. Jamir was addressing the 10thGeneral Conference of the Nagaland Law Students' Federation (NLSF) as the special guest, the event which was held at Hotel Saramati, Dimapur. Held on the theme “Justice for All: Addressing inequality through law,”he underscored that justice is a moral compass that must guide both personal and professional conductand must go beyond courtrooms.

He stressed that “justice for all, includes both you and me. Unless we have the spirit of justice in our own personal lives, justice remains incomplete.”Looking ahead to the future roles of the students, he said that justice begins with ‘us’ and reminded them that they must be prepared to carry the challenge forward. “We should know how to get justice for ourselves and deliver justice as well.”

The MP also shared personal reflections from his own legal journey, where he studied in Mokokchung Law College. He acknowledged that within his own class, there were others more knowledgeable than himself, but emphasised the importance of mutual support in the legal community. “In the law fraternity, we need to help each other,” he urged.

Jamir also reminded the young people that merely earning a degree is not enough to ensure a meaningful legal career. “Our profession may not always promise prosperity,” he said, “But if you develop your career in a way that others admire your work, then you are already contributing to a just society.”

Touching on the significance of Article 371(A), a special provision for Nagaland under the Constitution of India, the lone Lok Sabha Member encouraged students to engage deeply with their rights and responsibilities and urged them to take initiative. “Why not be the master to approach the Article for the use of our state?” He emphasised their role in guiding governance. “It is the responsibility of law students to push the government to pursue and analyse our rights. Only knowing them is not enough,” he asserted.

Jamir called on the studentsto live a refined and truthful life and to make a mark with integrity. While admiration is one of the best things in life, he maintained that it must be earned. He encouraged them to ensure that there would be breakthroughs in the society because of them.

“Justice is ultimately in the hands of the Creator,” he said, but reminded the gathering that the second person to deliver justice is the lawyer or the judge.

Earlier during the programme, President of the NLSF, T Tohuka Achumi delivered the presidential address. Esi I Namgi presented a special number, while the President of the Evangelical Union, City Law College, Dimapur invoked God's blessing.
