The Kami Welfare Union Kohima today celebrated Tsiikhenyie festival at Naga Heritage Village, Kisama with much pomp and traditional gaiety.
Tsukhenyie is celebrated by Chakhesang Nagas. The festival marks the end of a successful harvest year and is hence a time to rejoice and rejuvenate. It preludes welcome to a new year- spring season.
People allow themselves to relax, unite and celebrate. It is a time to revive and rejuvenate oneself before heading to the toiling work and invoke God’s blessing for sowing and prosperous for the whole year. Extending greetings, Nagaland’s minister for planning & coordination and land revenue Neiba Kronu, who hails from Kami village under Pfutsero Sub-Division of Phek district said today’s celebration was sort of advanced celebration and looks forward a grand combined celebration by the ending part of April. He stressed on the need to keep alive the rich culture and traditions of Nagas by celebrating traditional festivals and also follow certain code of taboo as practiced by forefathers. Kronu also emphasized on the need revive the indigenous games.
Earlier, the significance of Tsukhenyie was briefed by Neilo Khape. KWUK president Kewekolo Khalo chaired the formal function while vote of thanks was proposed by KWUK vice president Keziilhitso Kronu.
The festival was marked by tug of war, Thozhi, Tsobarii, Thopu Tsetse, Danimodarache, air gun shooting competition and wrestling. The festival concluded with a grand community feast.
