A two-member team has been dispatched to Kanjang Village under Meluri Sub-division in Phek District to investigate the mysterious death of buffaloes in the village in the recent past.

A doctor and an assistant have been sent to the village to investigate today, Dr Kewelelo Mero, Chief Veterinary Officer, told The Morung Express on September 7.

Dr Mero, however, refused to speculate on the number of deaths as well as causes, pending detailed investigation by the team. It is very sudden, he said, further informing that the CVO office received the report of the death yesterday and the team was rushed eventually.

The team might return in a day or two collecting samples and nothing can be stated regarding the deaths till detailed post-mortems of the samples are conducted, he added.

Sources at the Nagaland Veterinary Department directorate said that they were informed of the developments and waiting for the ground reports.

Earlier, video posted on social media on September 7 claimed over “30 buffaloes have died.” The tally, however, was not confirmed by this newspaper, officially and otherwise.
