Re-opens Legal Services Clinic at Sazolie College
Kohima, July 15 (MExN): The Kohima District Legal Services Authority (KDLSA) conducted legal literacy classes at Sazolie College, Jotsoma cum re-opening of Legal Services Clinic (LSC) at the college on July 15.
NSLSA, Public Relations Assistant in a press release stated that the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) and Secretary, KDLSA Phuleto Yeptho, NJS in the introductory speech apprised the gathering on the inception of the national legal services authority and how it was constituted and mentioned the main objectives of legal service authority, functions and role of panel lawyers and PLVs. He encouraged the students to render in goodwill services to the public and downtrodden by participating as Para Legal Volunteers (PLVs). He further pointed out important prevalent NALSA schemes like compensation schemes for victims of trafficking and commercial sexual; workers in the unorganized sectors, children, and drug abuse, disaster, senior citizens among others and later emphasized on the importance, benefits and functions of the Lok Adalat which is an alternative form of dispute redressal.
KDLSA Panel Lawyer Keduvi Zhotso in a presentation on consumer rights, stressed on basic protective act of consumer rights such as Right to Safety, Right to Information, Right to Choose, Right to Redress and Right to Consumer Education and Right to Healthy Environment. With this rights entitlement, he explained how an individual person or volunteered registered organization can claim his/her rights by filing a complaint through an application letter written to the district forum. He also noted that cases where the value of goods or services exceeds Rs 20 lakh can be filed in the district forum while Rs 20 lakh to Rs 1 crore in the state commissioner if the consumer finds out that the product purchased is defective or charged or hazardous. Zhotso also added that if an individual doesn’t feel satisfied with his complain, he can go for an appeal in the court or Supreme Court.
Nagali Shohe, Panel Lawyer KDLSA spoke on fundamental duties, she stated that among the existent 11 fundamental rights, the last one and 11th was inducted in 1986 Amendment Act 2002. She called the attendance to perform one’s duties and abide by them.
