Khekiho tables bill for creating Legislative Council

Dimapur, December 19 (MExN): Rajya Sabha member from Nagaland Khekiho Zhimomi today introduced a private member’s bill in the house, the ‘Nagaland Legislative Council Bill 2008’. In the bill, the MP lamented that the union government has not “tapped” for a long time “the democratic aspirations and features contained in the age-old Naga civilization as appreciated by Article 371-A of the constitution of India”.

He lamented the ‘delay’ caused in the creation of the Legislative Council for Nagaland state in spite of the state assembly’s resolution passed on August 19, in 2005. The MP urged the center to create second chambers in all the north east sates ‘in view of the peculiar geopolitical problems faced by them including insurgency’. The MP also said, that spending enormous amounts of money on the military, the police and the border security, would be a “waste” if simultaneous with it the internal institutional democratic ‘structures’ are not strengthened.
