Kohima, September 26 (MExN):  The Kohima District Level Competition under the banner of Khelo India 2019 culminated at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima on September 25. The programme was held under the theme "Sports for Peace & Development" sponsored by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. ADC Chiephobozou, Vekhoyi Chakhesang gave away the prizes to the winning teams during the culmination programme.


Exhorting the gathering, SDO Schu Zubza, Mhomo Tongoe said that Khelo India Youth Games, formerly Khelo India School Games is held annually in January or February. The national level multidisciplinary grassroots games in India held for two categories, namely under-17 school students and under-21 college students.


The program has been introduced to revive the sports culture in India at the grass-root level by building a strong framework for all sports played in our country and establish India as a great sporting nation, he added.


Under the program, about a thousand talented players from all over the country were selected for scholarship with an annual financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh per annum to each individuals for 8 years.  


Mhomo said that the program started in the year 2018 where the State of Haryana was the first champion followed by Maharashtra in 2019 and the next national level game will be held in Assam in 2020.

"If a State like Haryana , which is few sq km bigger than our state can do so well in National level, why can't we", he added urging the players to be more committed and do better in order to see our people representing our State at national level in coming days.


Under the banner, coaching camp for the teams in various disciplines, which included volleyball, badminton and athletic was started in the month of July 2019 in village level with a total of twenty villages under Kohima district. 


The block level competition was conducted in the first week of September where the first position holders participated in the district level competition, according to a DIPR report.
