Khonoma among 50 tourist destinations of India

Asia’s first green village, Khonoma has been marked as one of the 50 tourist destinations of India. This was announced by Minister for Tourism & Higher Education, Temjen Imna Along during his visit to Khonoma village on June 14 last.

In a programme held in his honour at Terhotsiese, Khonoma Community Hall Along made the announcement. He added that the Ministry of Tourism sees prospect in Khonoma village, Asia’s first green village to be selected as one of the 50 tourist destinations of India in the Tourism challenge mode project.

This announcement was also tweeted by Minister for Horticulture and Women Resource Development, Salhoutuono Kruse thanking Along for identifying Khonoma village as one of the 50 tourist destinations of India.

On his visit, Along was received by Minister Salhoutuonuo Kruse along with Khonoma Village Council, Khonoma youth organisation (KYO), Khonoma Eco Tourism Committee (ETMC). 

It may be mentioned that Union Minister for Finance & Corporate Affairs, Nirmala Sitharaman announced this while presenting the union budget 2023-24 on February 1. She announced that atleast 50 destinations will be selected and developed as a complete package of tourism.

The finance minister also said that these destinations will be selected through challenge mode using an integrated and innovative approach while the focus of development of tourism would be on domestic as well as foreign tourists.

She also proposed to launch an App in which all the relevant aspects of the tourist destination would be made available, in addition to aspects such as physical connectivity, virtual connectivity, tourist guides, high standards for food streets and tourists’ security, to enhance tourist experience.

To strengthen the domestic tourism, Sector specific skilling and entrepreneurship development will be dovetailed to achieve the objectives of the ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ initiative, the Budget 2023-24 proposed. To encourage tourism in the border villages, tourism infrastructure and amenities will be facilitated under the Vibrant Villages Programme, announced the Finance Minister.
