Khonoma, December 9 (MExN): The Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary (KNCTS) will celebrate its 25th anniversary with Neiphiu Rio, Chief Minister of Nagaland as the chief guest on December 12. The event will be also graced by LH Thangi Mannen, Retd Commissioner and Secretary, Government of Nagaland and Thepfülhouvi Solo, IFS, Retd Principal Secretary Government of Nagaland, “who has been very instrumental in the formative years and journey of KNCTS.’

The occasion will not only reflect on Khonoma’s remarkable journey from hunters to conservationists but also highlight the village’s evolution into a thriving tourist destination, stated a press release issued by Media & Publicity Committee of KNCTS 25th Anniversary. 

Established in 1998, Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary is a trailblazing initiative that has transformed from a hunting community to dedicated conservationists. The village’s recognition as the First Green Village of India and inclusion in prestigious global programs such as UNWTO Tourism Village Upgrade underscores Khonoma’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable tourism, it stated.

A Journey of Transformation
Founded 25 years ago, Khonoma embarked on a transformative journey, transitioning from a community of hunters to dedicated conservationists. The establishment of the Tragopan Sanctuary showcased Khonoma’s commitment to preserving biodiversity. 

This was initiative with a focus on protecting the endangered Blyth’s Tragopan, which is the state bird of Nagaland and their natural habitat in a core area of approximately 25 sq kilometres making Khonoma the first community conserved area (CCA) in Nagaland. Today there are more than 100 CCAs in Nagaland.

Khonoma Village: A Sustainable Tourism Haven
Khonoma has metamorphosed into a sustainable tourism haven, attracting visitors seeking an immersive and eco-friendly experience. The village’s picturesque landscapes, coupled with its rich cultural heritage, have turned Khonoma into a sought-after tourist destination.

Locals are actively involved in running homestays, serving as tour guides, operating tour services, and showcasing their craftsmanship to visitors. Artisans and craftsmen now have the platform to sell their products, fostering economic empowerment within the village.

Recognition and Achievements: A Trailblazing Legacy
Khonoma Village’s dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable tourism has earned it numerous accolades, including:

•    First Green Village of India: Khonoma holds the distinction of being recognized as the First Green Village in India, showcasing its commitment to eco-friendly practices and sustainability.

•    UNWTO Tourism Village Upgrade Program: Khonoma is the only village in India and South East Asia to be included in the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) Tourism Village Upgrade program 2022, underscoring its global significance in promoting responsible tourism.

•    India’s National Biodiversity Award 2021: Khonoma Village was honored with the prestigious India’s National Biodiversity Award in 2021 for the unique practise of “alder-based jhum cultivation” by its people for upholding the sustainable traditional farming practices under the category "sustainable use of biological resources".

•    Outlook Traveller Silver Award 2022: In 2022, Khonoma Village was awarded the Silver Award for Best Offbeat Destination in India by Outlook Traveller, recognizing its unique appeal and commitment to offering travelers an authentic experience.

The committee has invited all to join them as Khonoma Nature Conservation and Tragopan Sanctuary celebrates a quarter-century of environmental stewardship on December 12. The celebration also will feature cultural performances, interactive experiences, and a reflection on Khonoma’s journey toward sustainability and community prosperity.
