Come Khonoma Green Village, about 20 km away from Kohima, you will be surprised to see that not a single sweet wrapper or a piece of paper can be seen strewn in the village’s street.

Courtesy the Khonoma Students’ Union (KSU) who are responsible for initiating a worthwhile  effort in maintaining proper sanitation.

KSU president Medozevi Punyu told The Morung Express that the union had so far put up 145 litterbins within the village. “The response is very good,” he asserted adding that the union regularly visits all the schools at the beginning of the year and ask  the students not to throw anything on the roadways or surroundings but to dispose it properly only at the provided litterbins.

Frequent sanitation drives occupy the union’s activity-calendar in order to maintain cleanliness and environment-friendly atmosphere, Punyu said. The discards are the burned later, he added.

“Even Class-A students use to join us in this effort,” he said with a note of excitement, adding that the students as well as the villagers were very co-operative to the move. The president declared that the union will continue to pursue the effort with seriousness.
