Kids donate rare tortoise to Nagaland zoological park

Dimapur, January 18 (MExN): Boghinov, Fijord and Jutovi, all children of Er Shikaho Zhimomi (Retd.EE PWD) from Eralibill, donated one adult female Burmese tortoise to Nagaland Zoological Park on January 13.

Nagaland Zoological Park, Rangapahar Officer-in-Charge Obed Bohovi Swu in a press release said, it was learnt that the tortoise was a favorite pet of the children. However, they wanted to donate it to the zoological park and persuaded their parents to take them to the zoo to donate it. The tortoise has been kept in the zoo and is under close observation.

Burmese tortoises are found only in South East Asian region of the world. This is the only species of tortoise, which built nest to lay eggs. Their numbers are reducing in the wild mostly due to rapid deforestation and destruction of their habitat. With the receipt of the tortoise, the number of Burmese Tortoise has now increased to ten in the zoo.
The director of the zoo, Tongpangzemba Ao thanked the children and the parents for their noble gesture in saving the endangered species. Further, the director thanked all conservation conscious people who have continued to support the Zoological Park in diverse and urged to continue their support.
