Distribution of mini-kits of oilseed and pulses and planting materials in ‘aspirational district’ Kiphire was held under Krishi Kalyan Abhiyan (KKA) in the office complex of EE Irrigation & Flood here on June 26.
Kiphire’s Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Ali Sihab (IAS), who chaired the programme, informed that 25 villages in Kiphire district with population of more than 1000 people were selected under KKA. Agriculture being the main source of income for majority of the population, Government of India started the KKA project to help farmers by distributing seeds, giving scientific and technical know-how in farming various crops, he added.
The DC further remarked that if agriculture sector improves, the economy will ultimately be strengthened even at the grassroots. He therefore called upon the farming community to make the best use of the KKA project.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Abhijit Mitra, Director, National Research Center on Mithun and Nodal Officer, KKA, Kiphire stated that the main purpose of the project is to help farmers reap the benefits of latest technological and scientific advancement made in agricultural sector by providing logistics support to farmers.
He urged upon the farmers to bring change and development by making use of the assistance given by the government, stating it is the responsibility of the people and citizens of the district to bring change rather than expecting change and development to come from outside.
Dr. Abhijit further called upon the farmers to extend help and cooperation towards the department so that the projects under KKA are successfully implemented.
Also taking part in the program, Joint Director Renbemo Kikon, Directorate of Agriculture said the department is doing its best to mitigate the problems faced by the farmers and informed that action plan has already been given to the government. He further asked the gathering to encourage women representation in development sector as there are various development schemes under the department that is specifically designed to help women farmers’ community.
The Joint Director also cautioned farmers not to consume seeds given for plantation by the department as they are meant for cultivation not consumption.
Giving away seeds to farmers, Hukai Zhimomi, Deputy Project Director, ATMA told the village councils chairmen and secretaries to equally distribute seeds among farmers for the overall benefit of all.
R. Santsu Kikon, District Agricultural Officer (DAO) Kiphire in the vote of thanks said soil health card is given to villages selected under KKA to enable farmers to cultivate seeds and crops according to the fertility of soil.
