Kiphire, July 24 (MExN): With an aim towards improving the standard of the badminton game and to encourage young badminton enthusiasts in the district, Kiphire’s first district badminton tournament was successfully conducted at the indoor badminton stadium, 14th NAP (IRBN), Kiphire on July 23, organised by the Kiphire District Badminton Association (KDBA).
The tournament was organised for men’s doubles and men’s singles categories, wherein, 20 doubles teams and 10 singles players participated in the tournament.
In the men’s doubles discipline, Khingkhamong and Sekiri emerged as the champions with Zali and James as the runners-up, while Zali and James bagged the first and second prizes respectively in singles.
According to Dr Holiba Anar, President, KDBA, the tournament was more importantly organised to select district players to represent the district at the forthcoming inter-district & state open badminton championship to be held at Longleng from August 22 to 27.
With the absence of an indoor badminton stadium in the district headquarters, badminton has been a neglected sport in the district with many badminton enthusiasts playing out their love for the game outdoor depending on the mercy of the weather.
AS such the KDBA reached out to the 14th NAP (IRBN) officials to allow a one-day badminton tournament in their stadium and with their consent the tournament was materialised, according to the president.
