Kiphire’s Sumi students demand reservation

Dimapur, July 30 (MExN): The Kiphire Districts Sumi Students Union appeals to the Backward Reservation Committee for the inclusion of Kiphire district’s Sumis into the fold of reservation,

The Sumis of the district “right from the very beginning co-existed with other backward tribes” prior to the coming of the British, a note from the union’s president Atoka Chophy stated. “When the job reservation was introduced for the backward districts of Tuensang and Mon, much to our surprise the Sumis of erstwhile Kiphire Sub-Division were excluded when it was really put into practice” it stated adding that “in spite of all the historical facts and reality” of the backwardness “we nominally remain minus 33% reservation which is enjoyed by our neighbors under the same Administration.”

The demand of the Kiphire Sumis can also be supported by the Government of Nagaland notification (department of Personnel &Administrative Reforms) August 15, 1979 stated the union.

“In spite of our representations… submitted several times to the government, the grievances of the aggrieved community were never redressed. As a result of which the educationally backward Sumis of Kiphire District having the strength of 18000(approx) population could only produce 10 gazetted officers till date, of which the ratio stands1:1800(1officer in every 1800 population) This startling revelation is a matter to be ashamed yet we felt the esteem committee comprehends the reality and the position of the Kiphire Sumi” the union explained. In view of these, KDSSU requested the concern committee to examine the case “by using your God-gifted wisdom for which we will be indebted.”
