Kitchen garden being set up at 7 Mile, Model Village, Dimapur by Dreamers Education Foundation under the theme ‘Biodiversity and sustainable practices’.
Dimapur: Dreamers Education Foundation undertook an environment awareness program under the aegis of National Environment Awareness Campaign (NEAC) 2013-14 with a theme "Biodiversity and sustainable practices" by setting up a kitchen garden on February 22, 2014. The garden, measuring 1050 sq ft (30"x35") at an unutilized courtyard in the neighbourhood of 7 Mile, Model Village here was fenced by reusing a construction bamboo waste. The garden can be used continually throughout the year providing rotational cropping. The first phase crops planted included some local varieties of vegetables like onions, chilly, brinjal, maize, cabbage, tomato, sweet tomato, sweet potato, lady's finger, and bottle gourd etc, a press release informed.
The objective of the undertaking was to persuade the youths and their families to take active part in conservation of biodiversity and sustainable practices. Such kitchen gardens can provide domestic vegetable needs while maintaining healthy ecosystems with minimal negative impact to the environment. A sustainable food system as such also encourages local production and distribution infrastructures and makes nutritious food available, accessible, and affordable to all.
Sustainable practices, the release said, is living life in a way that uses resources in a responsible way. It should address the growing scarcity of the resources that we currently use like water, energy, clean air, raw materials and food. A major hurdle to achieve sustainability is the alleviation of poverty, the note stated.
The foundation has thanked the Dreamers Vineyard Boys and youths in the neighbourhood for taking active part in the awareness program and also to Alungwi Zeliang for supervising the plantations.
