Kohima, November 23 (MExN): The Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) stated that open burning of waste on lands including at landfill sites is completely prohibited under Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, Plastic Waste Management Rules 2016 and the National Green Tribunal (NGT).
KMC is in the process of mitigating the KMC Landfill (Dump Yard) of the existing deep seated fire which poses serious health risks to all citizens of Kohima and surrounding areas.
Disposal of waste has been shifted to an adjacent location in the same site.
It has come to the notice of the KMC that time and again manpower attached to Sanitation vehicles of Wards/ Areas/ Villages/ Organizations are found to be setting fire to the new Landfill.
“Now therefore, it is once again reiterated that opening burning of waste (even during mass social work) including at Landfill sites is completely prohibited. Defaulters/violators will be penalized as per Para 16 of the Honb'le NGT in OA-199 dated 22-12-2022 and the Sanitation vehicle of the particular/ ward/area /village/organization to which the violator/s is attached will not be allowed to dispose their waste at the KMC Landfill,” according to a release received here.
