Know your legal rights, women told

Wokha, September 20 (DIPR): One day seminar on Legal Awareness was held at Wokha on September 20 at LTC Hall, organized by Nagaland State Commission for Women in collaboration with National Commission for Women, New Delhi and co-ordinated by Kyong Eloe Hoho with District & Session Judge, Wokha V. Nyekha and Sr. SP Wokha Sejong Sangtam as resource persons.
Chairperson, NSCW, Sano Vamuzo while delivering the key note address on the topic, “Know your Rights” (Legal Rights of Women) said, unlike yesterday, Naga women everywhere are struggling hard to catch up with the rest of the advancing world. ‘We women in particular need to know our rights, so we can play our roles more effectively as sisters, aunts, mothers and grandmothers’ she said. She also pointed out that, denial of women’s rights can be called a serious violence against women and added that Women are not fighting for equality with men; we are already equal before God and before Law.
She also impressed upon the gathering that, each of you present here are all important people holding important posts for the welfare of your community, village and citizens who are in your care. You are stakeholders-leaders in one way or another, much depends on leaders especially the VCCs, VDBs, Head GBs, Head DBs, Presidents of Students Union and Women Societies etc. whatever responsibility you are entrusted with, do it faithfully, if you fail in your part others will suffer, said Sano.
SDO (C) Sadar, Wokha Albert Ezung who also spoke during the programme, stressed on the importance of women’s participation and expressed gratitude to the NSCW for organizing such seminars which will spread the message to uplift womenfolk and further said that, their efforts will surly make the society more progressive.
District & Session Judge, Wokha V. Nyekha spoke on the topic, “Statutory Rights of Women” & “Protection of Women from Domestic Violence”, while Sr. S. P, Wokha Sejong Sangtam dwelled on “Role of Police in safeguarding Women’s Rights”. The function was chaired by Abeni TCK, Member, NSCW while vote of thanks was proposed by Elen Konyak, Member, NSCW.
Meanwhile, in collaboration with National Commission for Women, Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) is organizing a Legal Awareness programme for Mokokchung District at Mokokchung Town hall on September 21. The day long programme under the theme ‘Know your Rights’ will be addressed by Marlemba, Public Prosecutor, Mokokchung and Vikram Khalate (IPS) SDPO, Mokokchung as resource persons on ‘Statutory rights of women & Protection of women from domestic violence’ and ‘Role of Police in safeguarding women rights’ respectively. The chairperson NSCW, Sano Vamuzo who will be attending the function will deliver keynote address.
