Kohima, June 17 (MExN): The Kohima Sumi Totimi Hoho (KSTH) in association with Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) organized a legal awareness seminar on June 16 at the auditorium of Mt. Olive College, Kohima. About 80 women attended the seminar.
In the introductory note, Kakheli Jakhalu, Member, NSCW said all the participants of the seminar are leaders in their own respective areas; hence, the responsibility of looking after the welfare of the people is mandated upon them all.
She asked the participants to be always alert and be on the look-out for people who may be living in their neighbourhood and may be seeking to do bad deeds, stated a press release from KSTH. Stressing that NSCW has been constituted to look after the rights of the women, Jakhalu said any woman who feels she has been wronged can bring her grievances to the NSCW and the Commission will look after her case without any expenditure on the part of the petitioner.
Joshua Sheqi, Advocate, Gauhati High Court (Kohima Bench) spoke as the resource person on the topic ‘Know Your Rights: Challenges faced by the Female Gender’. He highlighted on legislations and efforts to close the gender inequity. He also spoke on the laws governing rights of marriage, divorce and inheritance, protection of women from domestic violence and the need for the womenfolk to be aware of these rights.
Sheqi further enlightened the participants on the issues of human trafficking in India and prohibition of child labour. He told them to be clearly aware of how the rules are being disregarded, even leading to eventual imprisonment in some cases.
He meanwhile stressed that the male centric Naga society is the basis for the growth in the gender gap and asserted that education is the best tool to bridge the gap, the release added.
