Kohima, March 16 (MExN): Nagaland University conducted a seminar on ‘Know Your Rights’ for the non-teaching faculty of Kohima Campus, Meriema on March 14. Advocate Kezhokhoto Savi, president, Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) was the resource person.
Savi, among other topics, spoke on Consumer Rights, Human Rights, National Food Security, Public Services Delivery, Food Safety & Standard, Lokayukta, Indian Constitutional provisions protecting Christians, Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood & Regulation of Street Vending), Article 371A of Indian Constitution, and Nagaland State Consumer Helpline Toll free No. 1800-345-3701.
The NVCO president highlighted this year’s theme of World Consumer Rights Day (March 15), ‘Making digital marketplaces fairer’ and significance of the day. It is celebrated every year to pay solidarity with the International consumer movement and give more attention to promote basic rights of consumers, he said.
While stressing on human rights, Savi stated every human is entitled to the protection of his life, freedom and liberty, equality and dignity. “Slavery, poverty, physical torture, destruction of property, killing, hunger, insurgency, sex exploitation, forced labour, child labour, commercial sex exploitation, illiteracy, etc. are against human rights,” he asserted.
Savi further maintained that NVCO is serious about the acceleration of violation of Christians’ fundamental rights in the country. “It is important to create more awareness on the fundamental rights of the Christian as a secular state and to voice against the persecution of Christian in the country,” a press release from NVCO Press & Media Cell quoted Savi.
The university officers, according to the release, appreciated the presentation on ‘Public Services Delivery system’ with an appeal to the state government to implement the same. Savi also stated NVCO opposes deduction of one day salary of employees towards Chief Secretary Welfare Fund (CSWF). He also questioned the pending salaries of some group of government employees.
It was further noted that earlier in August 2017 NVCO had urged Governor of Nagaland PB Acharya to remove the 26 parliamentary secretaries and nine advisors in the State as the Supreme Court of India had already declared the post of parliamentary secretaries as unconstitutional in its July 26, 2017 judgment. “The total number of ministers including the chief minister has to be within 15 per cent of the total number of members of the legislative assembly of the state. Accordingly, the state of Nagaland can have only 12 ministers including chief minister,” Savi stated.
NVCO also demanded a powerful Lokayukta and not a “tooth-less tiger,” it was informed.
