Kohima, October 3 (MExN): The women and men departments of Union Baptist Church (UBC), Kohima conducted seminar on ‘Know Your Rights’ with president NVCO & convenor ACAUT Nagaland (legal cell) Kezhokhoto Savi, Advocate as Speaker.
Savi said there are basic rights granted to a person by birth, which can be called as natural rights. Human rights are entitled to a person to ensure protection of their life, freedom and liberty, equality and dignity, he added, according to a press release from NVCO Press & Media Cell.
“Human rights is a symbol of hope and the need of the hour as violation of human rights has become a day to day event in the society and churches are to play an active role in promoting peace, justice and social transformation,” Savi urged.
Speaking on National Food Security Act 2013, he said households covered under Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) are entitled to 35 kg of food grains per month and Priority Household (PHH) beneficiaries are entitled to 5 kg per person per month at the rate of Rs.3/- per kg for rice & Rs.2/- per kg for wheat. Savi added that the citizens’ right to be free from hunger is enshrined in Article 21 of India Constitution.
Meanwhile, the speaker lamented that the State Human Rights Commission is yet to be constituted in Nagaland. As one of the convenors of ACAUT Nagaland, he highlighted in details the present scenario of corruption prevailing in Nagaland and the urgent requirement of Lokayukta in the State. Savi asserted ACAUT can never allow the State Government to include any provision of prosecution sanction in the proposed Lokayukta.
Meanwhile, he expressed optimism about the removal of 26 Parliamentary Secretaries and 9 Advisors which is lying before the Principal Seat of Gauhati High Court. Allowing only 12 ministers will certainly promote clean election in the forthcoming State General Assembly Election, he added. Further, Savi maintained that the huge amount deducted from developmental projects in the name of Party Fund should be stopped.
According to the release, the congregation recommended to introduce Public Services Delivery system and Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood & Regulation of street Vending) Act especially to encourage the local people to sell their products (organic) in State capital. The congregation also commented that awareness on ‘consumer rights’ is still lacking in the town as well as rural/villages, it added.
