Dimapur: Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (KNSK), the apex organization of Konyak women has appealed for attention towards Mon District Civil Hospital. KNSK in a press release appended by its president Lomei Konyak and general secretary Moikap Konyak expressed concern that after the withdrawal of manpower by MSF, the Civil Hospital in Mon is undergoing an extreme shortage of workers. There is hardly one attendant in each ward in the hospital, it said. KNSK executive members had visited the Civil Hospital on February 17 with main objectives of checking the scenario of the hospital after partial handover of the same to Nagaland government by Doctors without Borders (MSF), and to see whether the hospital has been upgraded to 100-bedded capacity. According to the note, the hospital was declared to be upgraded to 100-bedded from 50-bedded in August 15 last, but yet to be implemented so.
The main problem in the hospital, as observed by the team, after MSF leaves is acute shortage of water. MSF has withdrawn its manpower, but still continue to provide basic amenities. The note stated that the hospital does not have water supply and MSF buy water to cater to the needs.
KNSK also expressed concern over irregularities of doctors and nurses. On the day of their visit too, some doctors and nurses were absent, it said. The women organization specifically mentioned Doctor of Medicine (MD), Dr. Thungchanbemo and dentist, Dr. Simon. Stating that the former had taken leave till December, but is yet to report to work and the latter is barely in station, KNSK has asked the two to report to work before March, otherwise it will take its own course of action.
Further, KNSK stated that the civil hospital has only one gynaecologist and poses great inconvenience during the period when the doctor concerned takes leave. It cited that in February, when the doctor was on leave, people went to Assam for delivery. In light of this, and keeping in mind the huge population of Mon district, KNSK has appealed to the authority concerned to depute one more gynaecologist to the hospital.
On the nursing institute to be started in Mon district, KNSK said that the building is complete and the public is asking for it to start soon. The note mentioned that according to Indian Nursing Council, a nursing institute can be started only if there is a hospital with 100-bedded capacity. Therefore, it has appealed for early implementation of 100-bedded in the Civil Hospital so the nursing institute can be opened immediately.
The press release further informed that according to medical superintendent’s report, there is only one ambulance in the hospital which is also non-functional. Stating that the Civil Hospital in Mon is a lifeline for the people of the district as well as Assam, Myanmar and other districts in the state, KNSK has called for special attention and efficient management of the same. Moreover, it appealed for immediate upgradation of the hospital, so there is increase in manpower and other facilities.
