Kohima, October 22 (MExN): In collaboration with the Kohima District Road Safety Committee (KDRSC), the Kohima College held a road safety awareness programme on October 22. The event took place in the college’s conference hall.

The event aimed to promote responsible road behaviour and sensitize students, faculty members, and local drivers to the importance of adhering to traffic rules to prevent road accidents. The programme was also part of the college’s ongoing extension activities in partnership with civic and governmental bodies, a press release stated.

The event was chaired by Khrieleü Zumvu, Assistant Professor, Department of History, and member of the Disaster Management Committee (DMC), Kohima College. In her opening remarks, Zumvu welcomed the resource person and all participants, including students, taxi, bus, and private drivers and emphasized the growing concern over rising road accidents in Kohima. She highlighted the need for collective responsibility among citizens to ensure safer roads and lauded the collaborative effort between the College and the KDRSC as a step toward meaningful community engagement.

Delivering the introductory remarks, Khriezenuo Angami, Head of the Department and Associate Professor of English, and member of the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), extended salutations to the resource person and all present. She noted that this event marked only the first step in the College’s sustained collaboration with the KDRSC to enhance civic consciousness. Angami informed that, as part of this initiative, four locations in Kruleizüo Colony have been identified for the installation of zebra crossings and other safety signage, reinforcing the programme’s practical commitment to improving road infrastructure and safety.

The keynote address was delivered by Solevi Metha, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic), Kohima. Drawing from his extensive field experience, Metha discussed key causes of road accidents in Nagaland, including negligence, over-speeding, and lack of awareness about road signs. He elaborated on traffic rules, the importance of valid documentation, two-wheeler safety, and aspects of the Motor Vehicles Act. Emphasizing discipline and civic responsibility, he encouraged students to become advocates for safe driving and pedestrian rights. His address was enriched with real-life examples and local case studies.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by  Vezhosa Ringa, Associate Professor, Department of History, and Convenor of the Disaster Management Committee, Kohima College.
