KOHIMA, MARCH 17 (MExN): The Kohima District Inter-Government Higher Secondary School (GHSS) and Government High School (GHS) Tournament concluded on Sunday at D. Khel Kohima Village Ground, with student-athletes competing across multiple sporting events.

Dr. Ketshukietuo Dzüvichü, PS to the Advisor for School Education and SCERT Nagaland, attended the inaugural program as the special guest. In his address, he highlighted the significance of education in personal and economic growth, while also stressing the need for students to adapt to the rising competition in academics and employment.

Citing data, Dr. Dzüvichü noted that Nagaland had 92,302 registered unemployed educated youth as of January 2022, the highest in the country. He urged intellectuals to guide students toward alternative career opportunities beyond government jobs and emphasized the need to harness their potential through available state resources.

On sports, he categorized athletic pursuits into three areas—hobby, profession, and fitness—while underlining the limited provisions for sportspersons in government jobs. He expressed optimism that the upcoming Nagaland School Education Sports Policy, spearheaded by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio and Advisor for School Education Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, would encourage young athletes.

The event was chaired by Kohima DEO Emilo Patton, who also delivered the welcome address. An invocation prayer was led by Vice Principal Rose Chishi Kenye of Dr. N. Kire GHSS, followed by a special performance from students of the same school. The oath-taking ceremony was administered by Neilazetuo, PET of Dr. N. Kire GHSS.

Seventeen schools participated in the tournament, with around 200 students competing. The winners will represent Kohima district at the inter-district tournament in Medziphema from March 24 to 26.
