Kohima: Man gets one year RI & fine in sexual assault case

Kohima, November 4 (MExN): Zasituo Tsukru, reportedly a former wrestler, was sentenced to one year of rigorous imprisonment under Section 354 of the Indian Penal Code for assaulting a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty.

The judgment was delivered on November 3, 2024, by the Principal District & Sessions Judge, Kohima, Mezivolu T Therieh, who also imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 under Section 354 IPC. In default of payment, the accused will undergo an additional three months of simple imprisonment.

In a press release, Additional Public Prosecutor (PP) Abraham informed that the case was investigated by Sub-Inspector Levinuo Nyuwi of the Women Police Station, Kohima, who collected evidence and filed the charge sheet in court.

During the trial, ten prosecution witnesses were examined, and the State, represented by L. Sashimongla, Special Public Prosecutor, successfully proved the accused’s guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

After considering the oral and documentary evidence, the Court found the accused guilty and sentenced him.

The Additional PP maintained that the conviction reflects the coordinated efforts of the police, prosecution, and witnesses. He reiterated the prosecution’s commitment to ensuring justice for women and safeguarding their dignity and safety, and lauded the courage of the victim and the diligence of the investigating agency.
