Nagaland Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio said that Kohima Multidisciplinary Sports Centre is set to be constructed at Indira Gandhi Stadium Complex, Kohima.

This centre aim to combine a cultural centre with a state-of-the-art indoor stadium, creating a multi-functional venue for community gathering, peace building activities, and sporting events, Dr. Rio said while speaking at the 10th meeting of the Governing Council of Niti Aayog in New Delhi on May 24.

“As an indigenous community with a rich heritage, the Naga tribes have long faced challenges in achieving cohesive unity due to differences in tribal customs, dialects, and historical divisions,” Dr. Rio stated adding that “To address these challenges, this centre aims to serve as a platform where the diverse Naga tribes can gather under one roof, promoting, cultural exchange, and mutual understanding.”

This Centre is designed to integrate seamlessly with various ongoing government interventions and initiatives.

The DPR has been submitted to the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region under PM-DevINE Scheme. The estimated cost of this project is Rs. 74 Crore.

Rio sought the support of GoI for this centre “ as this facility will strengthen social cohesion, enhance infrastructure, and offer a common platform for people of Nagaland to celebrate their cultural identity while striving for excellence in sports.”

It will be a landmark space for peace, unity and progress, Dr. Rio added.
