Kohima, June 25 (MExN): The Department of Power has launched an extensive disconnection drive against electricity bill defaulters and illegal power connections under the Kohima Electrical Division, officials said on Thursday.

In a press release, Executive Engineer Er Shiludi Lkr informed that the drive covers defaulting consumers who have failed to pay electricity bills, including government offices and SPM villages, as well as those with illegal or unauthorised electricity connections.

All categories of consumers in both urban and rural areas under the Kohima Electrical Division have been urged to clear their outstanding electricity bills at the earliest to avoid disconnection, the release said.

The department also warned the public against engaging in illegal or unauthorised use of electricity through practices such as hooking, tampering with energy meters and bypassing energy meters.

Such activities constitute serious offences and are punishable under the Indian Electricity Act, 2003, with penalties that may include fines, imprisonment or both, the release stated.

Consumers facing discrepancies in their electricity bills or having other billing-related grievances have been advised to visit the offices of their respective Sub-Divisional Officers (Electrical) for clarification, correction and rectification.

The department further encouraged all electricity consumers, including those using prepaid meters, to utilise the department’s online portal for bill payments and recharge services for greater convenience.

Officials also expressed concern over frequent transformer failures caused by unregulated electricity usage. Consumers were advised to install smart meters to promote judicious consumption of electricity, reduce stress on power infrastructure and minimise damage to transformers and electrical lines.

The department appealed to consumers to cooperate with the ongoing drive and comply with electricity regulations to ensure efficient and reliable power distribution.
