Kohima, August 6 (DIPR): As per the study conducted by the Pollution Control Board, Kohima Town produces about 45-50 metric tonnes of garbage in a day and out of these Kohima Municipal Council (KMC) with limited machineries could hardly clear about 20-25 metric tonnes in a day and the remaining becomes backlog garbage. ADC, Alun Hangshing cited shortage of vehicles and labours attached to disposing garbage’s and mainly traffic congestion as the reason for the backlog garbage’s. There are 40 colonies with around 90 garbage bins in Kohima town and presently KMC has eight (8) dipper trucks at their disposal.
The trucks starts the first round at 6 a.m in the main town and later take rounds in the colonies for collecting the garbage’s, Alun informed, and said that it can hardly finish the second round due to traffic congestion. With a view to give a cleaner Kohima, KMC has adopted new measures where in the trucks will be deputed for garbage collection in the evenings too, starting at 6 p.m and confining to the main town area. KMC is also trying to involve all the colonies in keeping the town clean Alum Hangsing further informed.
