
Kohima, June 8 (MExN): In pursuance to the notification of urban development department and Kohima deputy commissioner, the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of Single-Use Plastics including polystyrene and expanded polystyrene commodities shall be prohibited from July 1 in Kohima.
This was stated in a notification issued by Kohima Municipal Council.
It includes ear buds with plastic sticks, plastic sticks for balloons, plastic flags, candy sticks, ice cream sticks, polystyrene (thermocol) for decorations, plates, cups, glasses, cutlery suck as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, wrapping packing film around sweet box, invitation cards and cigarette packets, plastics or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) banners less than 100 micron, stirrers.
KMC Administrator, T Lanusenla Longkumer stated that the manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of carry bags made of virgin or recycled plastics shall not be less than 75 microns in thickness from September 30 and 120 microns in thickness from December 31.
Further, non-woven plastic carry bag shall not be less than 60 Gran Per Square Meter (GSM) from September 30.
All other clauses mandated in the “Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2016” and “Plastic Waste Management (Amendment) Rule, 2021” should be strictly adhered to.
All individual, institution and commercial establishment (educational institutions, offices, hotels, shops, restaurants, religious institutions/faith based institutions, industrial establishments, banquet hall etc) in the districts shall abide by the said ban and any breach shall be liable for penalties, a notification received here stated.
As per the Government of India, Ministry of Housing & Urban Affairs order, special enforcement squads will conduct surprise inspections and will impose heavy fines on the defaulters, a notification added.
