Kohima to get first SWM project in NE

KOHIMA: Minister for Planning, Economics and Statistics, Evaluation, Urban Development, Higher Education and Co-operation Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu would inaugurate the Kohima Demo Facility on Solid Waste Management on February 11 in the Kohima Local Ground from 8:00 AM onwards.

As per the directive of the Supreme Court regarding management of Municipal Solid Wastes in the state capitals and metro cities, an action plan for Solid Waste Management was prepared for Kohima Municipal Council.

This pilot project is the first of its kind in the entire north east region, introduced by Kohima Municipal Council in collaboration with the Nagaland Pollution Control Board and supported by Central Pollution Control Board.

In this project, wastes of biodegradable and non-biodegradable will be segregated for recycling proposes. For implementation, site development for setting up of infrastructures is under active process at Meriema.

Stating that the success of this project depend on the active participation of the people, the KMC appealed to all the denizens of the state capital to give helping hand and cooperation.

KMC source said the proposed demonstration project aims to create efficient, reliable and holistic system for management of solid waste so as to achieve a garbage free environment and improve the quality of life.

Sanitation committee convener Keduolhoulie will chair the inaugural function while KMC chairperson Menuovilie will also exhort the gathering.

OBJECTIVES
•    Setting up of a system for waste collection, segregation, storage and transportation.
•    Creating mass awareness on segregation of waste at source into biodegradable and non-biodegradable
•    Improve the transportation system for collection of waste
•    Setting up of waste processing facility
•    Capacity building for various stake holders
•    Involving NGOs/Public participation’
