Dimapur, November 1 (MExN): The Semi Youth Union of Koio village, Wokha, has sharply reacted to the press statement of the Koio Village Council where SYU was declared ‘organization of known chronic alcoholics and drug-abusers.’
A note from the SYU stated that the chairman and secretary of the council who made the press statement were found to have obtained no sanction from the council for the press statement. Therefore, the statement was an exercise reeking of self-interest, the SYU stated.
“Secondly, dubbing our organization as an organization of known chronic alcoholics and drug-abusers’ was nothing but a blatant lie with the intent to malign our organization” stated Chanchio Kikon “chairman” and Nrichemo Lotha, “secretary.” The SYU is peopled by members drawn from amongst former students’ union leaders and church youth office bearers, it explained. Further, the council’s allegation that the SYU is a self-styled organization comprising of just three people and an advisor “is another exercise in furthering their malicious propaganda.” The SYU informed that it was founded way back in 2006 with the “objective of looking after the common welfare of the people of the village and beyond; to work towards brining harmony among all sections of the people” and its “written constitution and code of conduct is strictly adhered to by all its 19 executive members.”
The statement said the council’s attack on the SYU is an insult to the “youths of the area” and “people working for the common welfare of all.” While acknowledging that Koio Village Council’s attack came after the union expressed support to one YY Kikon as political candidate for the coming election, the SYU nevertheless lamented that “politics should not have been misused to malign our organization.”
In a separate letter in response, the advisor of SYU Pfuchisao Kikon reiterated that the council had given no sanction to the chairman and secretary of the KVC. Terming the press statement as ‘misleading and malicious propaganda’ Kikon informed that he should know better since he is also member of the KVC itself apart from being the advisor of SYU. Kikon also informed that there was no meeting held by the council “against” SYU and Koio youth.
In regard to the charge the SYU is ‘an organization of known chronic alcoholics and drug abusers’ the advisor dared all to have a medical test taken on him “whether any drug substance would be found on me.” He reiterated that the statement of the council’s chairman and secretary was without the KVC sanction and was meant solely to malign the image of the Koio youth, the SYU and himself.
