Mon, January 9 (MExN): The Konyak Union (KU), Mon Headquarters has expressed its strongest condemnation and deep anguish what it termed as a “barbaric and inhuman” machete attack on a driver from the community in Jorhat.
The incident occurred on January 8 at the Jorhat Highway Bypass, Assam.
According to the Union, one person identified as Nayanjyoti Saikia allegedly launched the “unprovoked” attack on Tahngom Konyak, the driver of a vehicle transporting ten passengers from Kohima to Mon via Assam.
The victim, the sole breadwinner for his wife and two young children, is presently battling for his life in critical condition, it maintained.
In a statement, the union said such an act is “not only a grave criminal offence but also a blatant assault on human dignity, public safety, and the rule of law.”
It expressed disturbance over “growing instances of violence and insecurity faced by innocent citizens while travelling along national highways.”
Meanwhile, the KU expressed appreciation to the prompt action of the Superintendent of Police (SP), the Officer-in-Charge of Jorhat Police Station, and their team for intervening, rescuing the passengers, ensuring their safe return to Mon, and apprehending the alleged perpetrator.
It demanded that the perpetrator be “booked under the strictest provisions of the law” and asserted that the accused “must not be released under any circumstances, whether on bail or through any other legal leniency, until justice is delivered in its fullest measure.”
“Any attempt to dilute the seriousness of this crime will be viewed as a failure of the justice system and an affront to the victim and the Konyak community,” KU cautioned.
The union also appealed to the people of Assam to uphold harmony and peaceful coexistence between the two states.
It called upon the Government of Assam and law-enforcement agencies to strengthen security by enforcing round-the-clock highway patrolling, “especially along sensitive and high-traffic corridors to prevent criminal acts.”
“The Konyak Union stands in solidarity with the victim and his family during this traumatic period and reiterate its commitment to pursuing justice, peace, and the protection of the fundamental rights of all citizens,” added the statement issued by KU President K Yamao Konyak and General Secretary Wango Konyak.
