MON (MExN): The Konyak Union has termed as indifferent the attitude of the State government towards the demands made by the tribal body for the arrest of the 32 Self Defense Force (SDF) cadres and termination of services of two erring police officers in the case relating to the abduction on June 7 and subsequent killing of five persons belonging to the Konyak community allegedly by the SDF cadres. A meeting of the Konyak Union Advisory Board held on Monday, August 1 discussed at length, the apathetic attitude of the state government towards the demands put forth by the KU. The KU ultimatum expired on Sunday, 31st July 2005 without any response from the government.
The KU lambasted the State government of appeasement policy towards what it termed as a ‘terrorist organization’ and expressed frustration to remain ‘citizens of a lawless and chaotic government’. Meanwhile, as part of its planned 4-phase agitation, the KU will appeal (during the final phase) to all Konyak legislators in the State Assembly to resign from their chair indicating the solidarity of the Konyaks
“It is also disheartening to see the failure of the government to deal with the terrorist SDF who gave birth to a new era of bloodshed in our peace loving State”, Y. Wangtin Konyak General Secretary KU told The Morung Express.
The senior leader of the Konyak tribal body said the primary duty of the government was to provide security and protect the life of the citizen. “However, no citizen is secure under the cloud of this present atmosphere which is questionable”, he said.
The KU Advisory Board meeting has now decided to take up an indefinite phase wise agitation starting from August 8 to 9, which will be a total bandh in the entire district covering business establishment, educational institution and all government office. However police, para- military, medical, fire services, and all central departments will be exempted from the bandh. The second phase of the boycott will be on 15th August, Independence Day. The 3rd phase will involve picketing of all government offices from August 25 indefinitely. The final phase will appeal to all Konyak legislators to resign from chair indicating the solidarity of the Konyaks.
