
Kohima, August 2 (MExN): Konyak Union Kohima (KUK), Konyak Nyupuh Sheko Khong (Konyak Women’s Association KNSK, Kohima Unit) and Konyak Students’ Union Kohima (KSUK) held a joint meeting in connection with the abuse of a nine year old Konyak girl Lemmon Konyak residing as a domestic help with a Naga family in Kohima.
A press note received here this evening by President and Press and Information Secy, KNSK, Kohima unit, stated that on July 31 the minor child was found crying and loitering around Bayavü area by one Manipuri brother who on realizing that the child was a Naga, handed over the child to a Lotha family where she was taken care of. Finding that she belonged to Konyak community the Lotha couple contacted their Konyak friend, who in turn informed and handed over the child to the custody of the KNSK Kohima unit.
The KNSK on further enquiry discovered that the child had run away owing to extreme physical abuse. The child’s body bore marks of being mercilessly beaten.
The three unions summoned the concerned family with whom the child was residing and said the family admitted that they had committed the crime also begged for forgiveness.
The unions while expressing deep shock had decided to take the case to higher authorities for legal action.
However the three unions forgave as the concerned family begged for forgiveness in true Christian brothers and sisters spirit.
The organizations strongly condemned such inhuman act and warned that strong actions will be taken against anyone found mistreating children from the Konyak community kept as domestic help in their homes and further expressed their appreciation and deep gratitude to the Manipuri brother and Chumthungo Ezung and family for their kind gesture in saving the child from further trouble.
