Konyak Students Union Mokokchung (KSUM) stormed into the semifinals of the ongoing MDFA Trophy 2024 after a commanding 4-1 win over NU Lumami in the second quarterfinal match at Imkongmeren Sports Complex on Wednesday, October 23. The victory secured KSUM a spot in the semifinals, where they will face Team Gilgal on October 26.
From the opening whistle, KSUM demonstrated their dominance, taking control of the game early. In just the 7th minute, Naoman Konyak put KSUM ahead with a well-taken goal, setting the tone for the rest of the match. Naoman Konyak quickly added a second in the 16th minute, completing his brace and giving his team a comfortable 2-0 lead. KSUM’s relentless attacking paid off again in the 42nd minute when Pangteh Konyak found the back of the net, extending the lead to 3-0.
Just before halftime, NU Lumami managed to pull one back as Neilie Konyak scored in the 45th minute, offering a glimmer of hope for the team. The first half ended with KSUM leading 3-1.
After the break, KSUM adopted a more defensive strategy, while NU Lumami pushed for a comeback. However, KSUM’s superior coordination and stamina kept their opponents at bay. Despite NU Lumami’s efforts and several free kicks near the penalty area, they struggled to convert their opportunities into goals.
KSUM sealed the match in the 81st minute when N Alei Konyak scored the fourth goal, putting the game out of NU Lumami’s reach. The 4-1 win ensured KSUM’s progression to the semifinals, while NU Lumami bowed out of the tournament.
KSUM will now take on Team Gilgal in the semifinals, with both teams eyeing a spot in the MDFA Trophy 2024 final. The match patron of the second quarterfinal match was Imtiyapang, Councillor, Mokokchung Municipal Council.
