Call for scientific assessment of natural calamities in both States
Mon, August 25 (MExN): The Konyak Union (KU) and All Tai Ahom Students’ Union (ATASU) has resolved to address all bilateral issues, including border concerns, through direct dialogue, while ruling out the involvement of any third-party organisation.
At a joint meeting held at Sivasagar, Assam, on August 22 (Saturday), the two community bodies reaffirmed their historical and fraternal ties and agreed to constitute a Peace Committee to prevent misunderstandings and facilitate peaceful resolution of future disputes.
“The house unanimously resolved that any matter relating to border issues or other concerns between the two communities shall be addressed through mutual dialogue between the Tai Ahom and Konyak Union, in a spirit of mutual respect and understanding, without involving any third-party organization,” KU Press & Media Secretary Kaibo Konyak said in a press release.
Emphasising the importance of maintaining peace and preventing misunderstandings or untoward incidents, the meeting decided to set up a ‘Peace Committee’ comprising representatives of the concerned organizations. It stated that the committee will work towards maintaining communication, promoting mutual understanding and facilitating the peaceful resolution of any issues that may arise between the communities in the future.
The house also expressed serious concern over the recent devastating natural calamities, including landslides and floods in Mon District, Nagaland, and parts of Assam.
The joint forum appealed to the Governments of Nagaland and Assam to undertake proper scientific and technical assessments of the causes and contributing factors behind such calamities. “The house stressed the need for preventive measures, scientific planning and long-term environmental management to minimize the risk of similar disasters in the future,” the release stated.
“The Konyak Union and ATASU reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the bonds of friendship, brotherhood and mutual respect between the Konyak and Tai Ahom communities and to working together for peace, harmony and sustainable development in the region,” the release added.
