Coming down heavily on the current peace process, the Konyak Union today in an emergency meeting held here described the “Government of India-sponsored peace process” as nothing but a “killing process” of “innocent Konyak public”. “We do not appreciate the peace process because there was more peace during the past than now. The peace process is just a lame excuse creating an opportunity for the criminals to use their guns and for violence against innocent Konyak public”, stated a press communiqué issued by Tingnyei and Nawang, President and General Secretary respectively of the Konyak Union.

The KU made it clear that the Konyaks do not accept this process and will not support it anymore if it goes on this way, for it has claimed more innocent lives than ever before. “It is almost a killing license. The ground rules of the peace process do not allow the use of arms and any killing but look what is happening! The GoI is playing ‘monkey and cat game’ resulting to loss of many innocent Konyak lives but nothing has been done to stop it. GoI has failed in its part. Therefore, we do not accept the peace process. It is a big farce”, the KU communiqué issued after the meeting stated.

The emergency public meeting held in connection to the killing of “two innocent Konyak boys”—Phopa and Pongjei of Chingkhao Chingnyu Village at Kohima on January 13 last allegedly by the NSCN (IM) and which was attended by KU members, MLAs, Konyak students, Konyak mothers, KBBB, all KU units, village councils, public leaders and the general mass also blamed the State Government for remaining “ineffective” as far as peace and security of the Konyaks was concerned. “Where is the security-maintaining department? Where is the law? Where is peace and security of the Konyak? Why is Konyak’s blood scarified at the altar? For what purpose? For what mistake committed by us? Where is justice?” the communiqué queried.

The KU asked that if the state government has any concern for the Konyak, then it must retrospect the atrocities against the Konyaks and immediately take up stern action against the culprits. “If the state fails to apprehend the culprits and punish them accordingly in the light of the Naga society, otherwise, Konyak will deem the state government as a government against the Konyak community—a puppet government”, it stated.

Earlier, the emergency meeting vehemently condemned the killing of “innocent people” and termed it as an “intensified act of killing of Konyak community”. “The slain boys were absolutely innocent boys working at N.K.Garage, Imphal Road (BOC) Kohima”, the KU once again reiterated and adding that the Konyak community neither belongs to any faction nor did it have anything to do with any faction.

Pointing out that the killers falsely claimed that the boys belonged to NSCN (K), which is “completely false”, the statement maintained that “the killers may say anything to justify the act but the truth will remain in the hearts of the Konyaks and God and people will bear witness to it”.

Charging the NSCN (IM) for deliberately killing many innocent Konyak publics including even small children, the KU recounted that during the last visit of NSCN (IM) Collective Leadership in 2004, two innocent students, Late. Chahtai and Late Panglem of Totok Chingnyu were inhumanly murdered at Mon and reminded everyone that a memory stone erected for them stands at Private Bus station Mon as testimony to the murders. Again it alleged that another two boys were slain on January 13, 2007 when NSCN (IM) leader Th Muivah visited Nagaland. “And while IM National leaders were fasting and praying their boys were out murdering innocent people. Therefore, we ask, is innocent Konyak’s blood to be sacrificed during their visits to Nagaland? Do they drink Konyak blood?” Stating that the Konyak community never questioned the killing of Konyak belonging to any faction and will not question it in future “but we will never compromise the killing of innocent people”, the KU maintained.
