KVC objects to PPP model in medical college project

KOHIMA, OCTOBER 6 (MExN): The Kohima Village Council (KVC) has expressed dismay that the Government of Nagaland is contemplating to take up the Nagaland Medical College project on Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode.

A press note from the Chairman, KVC, Neiphi Kire and Secretary, Zeneizo Rutsa wondered “how the government can change its mind to go on PPP mode after signing the Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of India (GoI) to upgrade the Naga Hospital Authority Kohima (NHAK) as the Govt. District Hospital to a Government Medical College.”

“It was learned that as per Agreement, the Central Government has already released some of the funds for establishment of the College. In fact, even the first visit of Medical Council of India (MCI) has already taken place,” the KVC informed.

It stated that if the government keeps on arbitrarily changing its decision and fails to adhere to the agreement reached, it will totally lose the trust of the public and the central government. “A government Medical College with modern amenities is the need for the hour for poor patients and villagers who cannot afford the services of private hospitals. Simply put, in PPP mode, the cost of capital investments spent plus interest by the private party will be charged from the patients,” the KVC viewed.

Putting on record the council’s objection to this move by the state government, the KVC informed that it “had never agreed to give away their prime lands to the Government of Nagaland to set up Medical College on PPP mode.”

It therefore asked the government to implement the agreement with the Government of India in letter and spirit.
