The Kohima Village Gazetted Officers’ Association (KVGOA) Island was formally inaugurated today at the entrance of Nagaland Legislative Assembly (NLA) Secretariat here. KVGOA created the memorial in commemoration of its 25 years of existence as an accolade for the association and a token contribution to the public.
Inaugurating the same, KVGOA president Er. Keviletuo Yiese said the KVGOA Island is a symbolic step to show the association’s love and concern for Kohima city. He said it is precedent for others to follow suit and at the same time called upon other communities to come forward and beautify Kohima city.
“With full support and co-operation from the district administration, the roundabout/island was adopted for development and beautification,” said Dr. Menuosietuo Tseikha, convenor Jubilee Island Committee.
The Island selected for development and beautification measures an area of 582.46 Sq.m with a perimeter of 91.16 meters.
Keeping in view the location of the Island in terms of security, usages, etc., minimum design elements consisting of traditional and modern materials were used in the KVGOA Island.
Five pillar stones skillfully hand-carved into the letters KVGOA was placed strategically in the middle of the oval island making the carved letters visible from all ends. Focus light was provided for illuminating the letters at night.
25 pillar stones of about 3’0”-4’0” height signifying the 25 years of KVGOA, each stone depicting a year starting from 1991 to 2016, have been placed at equitable distance along the periphery of the Island.
Railings with galvanized iron pipes and chains were used between the stones to act as a boundary restricting passage inside the island at the same time adding aesthetical purpose. Outdoor lamps were provided atop for safety of passersby at night.
Further, edges/hedges of different coloring leaves with low maintenance were planted along the periphery of the island. There is also a gate with 2 risers of steps at the entrance of the Island allowing entry during maintenance of the Island.
Meanwhile, a grand finale silver jubilee celebration of the KVGOA will take place on October 13, 1:00 pm at Kohima Village Council Hall. Minister for Environment, Forest & Climate Change Dr. Neikiesalie (Nicky) Kire will grace the occasion as the chief guest.
