KVIC announces wage hike and new initiatives for Khadi Artisans

DIMAPUR, SEPTEMBER 20 (MExN): On Prime Minister Narendra Modi's birthday, the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) announced significant measures to benefit Khadi artisans during an event at the Asmavati Riverfront in Porbandar.

KVIC Chairman Manoj Kumar revealed that, effective October 2, 2024, wages for spinners will increase by 25% to Rs 12.50 per hank, while weavers will see a 7% rise in their wages.

In a bid to promote Khadi heritage, a stainless steel memorial charkha was unveiled at the venue, echoing similar installations at Delhi International Airport and Varanasi's Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport. Kumar emphasized that this initiative aims to connect younger generations with Mahatma Gandhi's legacy and enhance awareness of Khadi.

Additionally, the commission distributed Rs 101 crore in margin money subsidies to 3,911 beneficiaries under the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), resulting in the creation of 43,021 new jobs. Kumar noted that over the past decade, PMEGP has generated employment for 83.48 lakh people through nearly 10 lakh new projects.

The event was attended by representatives from Khadi institutions, artisans, and KVIC officials, marking a pivotal moment for the empowerment of Khadi artisans in India.
