KVK Dimapur conducts Oilseed Model Village programme in Toshiho

DIMAPUR, AUGUST 11 (MExN): To reduce the dependency on oil imports and enhance economic resilience in rural communities, the Government of India is promoting the cultivation of oilseeds. 

Under this, the Oilseed Model Village (OMV) concept, where in the Model Villages can serve as miniature self-sufficient, sustainable and one village can inspire other villages are being taken up. 

The OMV programme is being taken up in three villages i.e., Dhansiripar, Yeveto and Toshiho by KVK Dimapur, ICAR Nagaland Centre, ICAR-ATARI Zone VII, Umiam, Meghalaya. As part of the programme, training-cum-seed distribution of Soybean under OMV programme was conducted in Toshiho village on August 8. 

Thefusa Nakhro, District Agriculture Officer, Niuland, graced the occasion as the chief guest. He commended the efforts of KVK Dimapur and urged the farmers to focus on scientific sowing techniques, timely cultural operations, and effective harvesting practices to maximize the yields.

Dr Phool Kumari, Senior Scientist cum Head, KVK Dimapur, provided an insightful speech, underscoring the significance of the OMV programme in enhancing local agricultural productivity and improving farmer livelihoods.

Dr. Chingakham Sima Chanu, SMS Home Science led an awareness session on processing of Soybean. Later, a group discussion was initiated by Dr Moanaro, Programme Assistant on pest incidence. The KVK personnel urged the farmers to form a WhatsApp group for quick dissemination of agricultural information. 

Earlier, Dr Bendangla Imsong, CTO Plant Breeding and OMV in-charge, delivered the welcome address and highlighted the objectives of the programme, emphasizing the importance of adopting modern agricultural practices and the benefits of soybean cultivation.

Altogether 85 farmers participated in the programme. Khekato Zhimomi, Chairman, and Yeseka Chishi, Head GB, Toshiho village expressed gratitude towards KVK Dimapur for the efforts.
